Groundhog Day 2025: Will we have to wait another six weeks for spring?

This February will bring not only Valentine's Day, but also a traditional "meteorological" holiday - Groundhog Day. On February 2, millions of people in the United States, Canada and some European countries will once again turn their attention to the small, furry rodent to find out when to expect spring warmth.

How does a groundhog predict the weather?

Groundhog Day is a kind of folk weather prediction that dates back to Ancient Rome. Once upon a time, hedgehogs were used for this, but later the tradition transformed: in Germany, the predictions were entrusted to badgers, and in the USA and Canada, to groundhogs.

The forecast follows a simple scheme:

  • a groundhog crawls out of its hole;
  • if he sees his shadow, he goes back to sleep, which means six more weeks of winter;
  • If there is no shadow, spring will not be late.

Ironically, it is a sunny day that portends a long winter, and a cloudy day that portends an early warming.

How is Groundhog Day celebrated?

In the USA, this holiday has become almost national in scope. Fireworks, parades and numerous TV reports create the atmosphere of a real festival. The main event takes place in the town of Punxsutawney (Pennsylvania), where the most famous groundhog forecaster, Punxsutawney Phil, “works”.

However, not everyone is happy about this tradition: animal rights activists emphasize that a sudden awakening is stressful for the animal, and call for a more humane approach.

Hollywood influence: why is “Groundhog Day” also a cinematic term?

The holiday was made famous worldwide by the cult comedy Groundhog Day (1993) . In the film, journalist Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray) is stuck in a time loop and forced to relive February 2nd over and over again until he changes himself.

It was thanks to this film that the expression "Groundhog Day" became synonymous with monotony, routine, and repetitive situations.

Is there Groundhog Day in Ukraine?

Yes, and it even has its own “meteorologists.” The weather in Ukraine was usually predicted by Lviv marmots Marusya and Misha, as well as their Kharkiv colleague Tymko.

After 2023, the main Ukrainian weather forecaster was Tymko, who survived the occupation of the Kharkiv region. His forecast is eagerly awaited this year as well.

So on February 2, all eyes will be on the groundhogs. Will spring come early, or will we have to wait another six weeks? The shadow of the furry meteorologists will tell!
