The Russian army is increasing the pressure on Donbas, seizing new territories, but the strategic attention of the occupiers is gradually shifting to the south. the Financial Times writes , the Ukrainian authorities believe that Russia is preparing a large-scale offensive in the Kherson region.
A new offensive
Over the past month, Russian forces have captured significant territory in Donbas, threatening strategically important cities such as Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. However, Kherson, the first regional capital that came under occupation after the invasion in 2022, remains a "valuable prize" for them.
Oleksandr Prokudin, head of Kherson OVA, warns: Russia has assembled more than 300 boats for a possible crossing of the Dnipro. The occupiers have also deployed their best drone units, improving attack techniques and operator training.
Since mid-summer, Russian troops have launched more than 9,500 drone attacks on Kherson and its surroundings. The target is not only military facilities, but also the civilian population. Drones attack transport, humanitarian convoys, markets, gas stations, cafes and aid centers.
"Peaceful residents of Kherson became victims of an experiment without precedent in a modern European war," writes the FT.
Many residents carry detectors with them to detect the approach of drones. However, the flight range (up to 15 km), speed over 100 km/h and the ability to fly at low altitude make them almost invulnerable.
Kremlin plans
Experts believe that the intensification of attacks is part of the Kremlin's plan to put pressure on Ukraine. Russia seeks to strengthen its position before a possible change in the US administration after the 2024 elections.
The Ukrainian authorities are closely monitoring the development of events. As Prokudin notes, Kherson can become the epicenter of a new offensive, and the accumulation of enemy resources indicates preparation for a long battle.
