According to our sources, there is general confidence in expert circles that during a meeting with German Chancellor Scholz, US President Joe Biden "invited" Berlin to increase financial and military assistance to Ukraine.
Insiders note that Biden is well aware that the United States cannot provide Ukraine with financial assistance on the scale that would be needed, and this could have disastrous consequences for Ukraine, as well as for his own political image before the upcoming elections. The Ukrainian crisis is clearly becoming an “Achilles heel” for Joe Biden.
The initiative therefore depends on Berlin, which, according to some sources, should take on the financial obligations for now. However, Biden promises that the United States will compensate Germany for these costs later through new loans, once it gains control of the White House, which provides additional resources and opportunities for such decisions.
It will be a real challenge for Scholz to “sell” this approach to European partners. It is worth noting that similar exchanges have already taken place in history, in particular in the case of tanks, when the Germans provided their Leopards and the US promised Abrams, but the latter were provided much later and with additional conditions.
