a columnist for the British newspaper The Guardian, believes that US President Joe Biden should initiate peace talks on Ukraine and reach an agreement with Russia, without waiting for the possible arrival of Donald Trump as US president. According to Jenkins, the geopolitical situation is changing, and a change of president could have unforeseen consequences for stability in Europe and security on a global scale.
He believes that Putin will want to wait for Trump to begin negotiations, but the Republican in office will face pressure from his environment and allies to continue the war.
According to Jenkins, there is no alternative to the Minsk and Istanbul agreements, and Russia will retain control over some territories of Ukraine, but will agree to Western guarantees for Ukraine. And Kyiv must recognize that this will not be NATO membership.
“Joe Biden should aim to end at least one of his wars before he leaves. Perhaps a deal can be struck before the chaos and uncertainty of the second Trump era sets in. The US should seize this moment and give Russia the outlet it needs. Putin could pass off failure as pragmatism. Who knows, maybe then he will host Trump in Moscow,” Jenkins writes.
It should be noted that in the West, there are now opposing proposals to Biden - to increase aid to Ukraine and give permission for "long-range combat" by the end of his term.
But, as we see, there are other opinions.
