About 2 million Ukrainian refugees may remain abroad

As of the end of January 2024, 4.9 million Ukrainians are abroad due to the war. From 1.4 to 2.3 million people may remain outside Ukraine. This is reported by the Center for Economic Strategy.

"As of the end of January 2024, 4.9 million Ukrainians are abroad due to the war. The vast majority of refugees are women (the largest share is women aged 35-44 - 13%) and children," the report says.

As of January 2024, the largest share of Ukrainian refugees in Europe resides in Germany (30%) and Poland (22%). Outside of Europe, the largest countries in terms of the number of Ukrainians admitted since the beginning of the military conflict are the United States (280,000 people), the United Kingdom (253,200) and Canada (210,200).

It is noted that many countries are gradually reducing spending on refugees and making conditions for them stricter than at the beginning of hostilities in Ukraine.

According to the CES calculations, from 1.4 million to 2.3 million Ukrainians may remain outside Ukraine under various scenarios.
