The UK has banned its intelligence agencies and military structures from sharing US intelligence data marked “Rel UKR” (Releasable to Ukraine). The move comes after the US removed the level of clearance that allowed it to be shared with Ukraine, the Daily Mail reports.
This policy shift is likely to have a serious impact on Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against a Russian offensive, as countries such as Australia and New Zealand have also been active in sharing intelligence with Ukraine since the start of the war. However, the US has now decided to suspend this information sharing until further notice, causing tensions between the allies.
The ban applies to key British structures, including the government's radio intelligence agency GCHQ and intelligence units of the Ministry of Defense. This came against the backdrop of an official US statement on the suspension of military aid to Ukraine, which further deepened the rift between the two states.
