In the first half of 2025, more than 5,000 Ukrainians have exercised their right to change their name. According to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, such cases were recorded 5 017. Most in the capital: 784 residents of Kiev have submitted relevant applications.
Among the regions were the leaders of the Dnipropetrovsk region (433 cases), Lviv (403), Odesa (359), Kiev (335) and Kharkiv (255).
Who and how can change the name in Ukraine
According to the law, every citizen of Ukraine who has reached the age of 16 is entitled to change his name, surname or patronymic. Persons aged 14 to 16 may do so with the written consent of the parents or guardian.
To do this, contact the state registration department of civil status (DRACS) at the place of residence. If a person resides abroad - to the consular institution.
What is required to change the name
The procedure includes submission of the application and mandatory package of documents:

passport of a citizen of Ukraine;

birth certificate;

marriage documents or termination (if any);

documents on children (if any);

photo card;

a written obligation to provide truthful information;

a receipt for payment of the state duty (5,10 UAH for the first shift, 51 UAH - for repeated).
Persons aged 14-16 also need parents' consent.
After submission of the application, the documents are checked, in particular - by requests to the police. It is checked whether there are convictions, search, false data. The application is considered up to three months, in some cases up to six.

If the change of the name is allowed, the applicant receives an official certificate. After that, within three months you need to update the documents - passport, identification code, diplomas, legal documents, etc.
If during this term a person does not turn to the DRACS for the registration of the certificate - the permission is canceled, and the procedure will have to be re -re -.
The Ministry of Justice notes that as part of the barrier policy, the most simple and affordable conditions are created so that everyone can exercise their right to change the name without discrimination and unnecessary obstacles.
