Meat remains an important part of the diet for most people, but cardiologists warn that some types of meat can significantly increase cardiovascular risks, Parade , citing medical researchers.
While meat is a major source of protein and iron, especially for people with anemia, a 2021 study found that regular consumption of meat is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even pneumonia.
Cardiologist Joyce Oen-Hsiao says a plant-based diet is the most heart-healthy, thanks to its high fiber and low fat content. It can also help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
"Increasing the amount of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and nuts in the diet is directly associated with a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease," she explains.
The worst meat for the heart
According to Oen-Hsiao, there are two types of meat that are most harmful to heart health.
1. Red meat, especially fatty parts
Red meat contains significant amounts of saturated fat, which raises levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol.
"Excess saturated fat can cause plaque to build up in the heart's arteries. This can block blood flow, leading to heart attacks or strokes," says the doctor.
2. Meat delicacies and hot dogs
These foods are usually high in sodium and saturated fat. Excess salt increases blood pressure and can also cause swelling.
Oen-Hsiao notes that deli meats often contain nitrates, substances that have been linked to an increased risk of cancer and hypertension.
In addition, excessive consumption of red meat increases the risk of obesity and some cancers.
Which meat is considered healthier?
The American Heart Association and Dr. Oen-Hsiao recommend limiting red meat and preferring:
– baked or steamed poultry without skin;
– fish, especially salmon and other species high in omega-3 fatty acids.
Such products help maintain a balance of nutrients and do not overload the cardiovascular system.
