Coffee remains one of the most popular drinks in the world, as it helps you wake up, improves concentration and gives you energy. However, according to nutritionists, not all combinations with coffee are safe for the body. Some of them can worsen digestion, reduce the absorption of nutrients and even create additional stress on the heart.
Experts point out that one of the most common mistakes is drinking coffee with low-quality milk additives. These include cheap vegetable creamers, powdered substitutes, or skim milk. Such products may contain synthetic thickeners, which, when combined with caffeine, cause bloating and discomfort. In addition, skim milk is less digestible with hot drinks.
No less undesirable is the combination of coffee with fatty meat dishes. After such a meal, caffeine can slow down the work of digestive enzymes, which leads to a feeling of heaviness, bloating and prolonged digestion. Nutritionists advise taking a break for at least 40 minutes before drinking coffee.
Particular attention should be paid to foods rich in iron, such as liver, buckwheat, spinach or legumes. Coffee can reduce the absorption of this element by almost 40%, which is especially dangerous for people with anemia, children and pregnant women. In such cases, it is recommended to wait at least an hour between eating and drinking.
Experts also advise against combining coffee with alcohol. Despite the popular belief that espresso can "sober up," in reality, such a combination only masks the state of intoxication, while increasing the strain on the heart and the risk of dehydration.
Another undesirable combination is coffee with chocolate or cocoa. Both products contain stimulants, so their combination can lead to an excess of caffeine in the body. This, in turn, provokes anxiety, rapid heartbeat, and sleep disturbances.
Experts emphasize that it is best to drink coffee 40–60 minutes after a meal and to avoid drinking it on an empty stomach, especially for people with stomach problems. Safe combinations include nuts, a small amount of cheese, or brown bread. It is also important to drink enough water, as coffee has a mild dehydrating effect.
Thus, proper consumption of coffee allows you not only to enjoy the drink, but also to avoid negative effects on the body.
