The candidate for chancellor of Germany from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) arrived in Kyiv, where he held an important meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. During the negotiations held in the capital of Ukraine, the main topics were the strategy of further actions in the war and the possibility of supplying Ukraine with Taurus missiles, which can become an important element in the fight against Russian aggression.
Previously, Friedrich Merz supported the transfer of these long-range missiles, unlike Scholz, who was categorically against it.
"In Germany, there is a rather controversial debate about what kind of weapons can be supplied. But the USA and France have already adopted a different position. We in the CDU clearly understand that such systems are needed to achieve exclusively military goals - military bases, not the civilian population and not infrastructure, but precisely the points from which the war against your country is being waged. I spoke in the Bundestag a few weeks ago: by limiting the range of your weapons, we are literally forcing you to fight with one hand behind your back. This is unfair and we support changing this policy,” Mertz said
