The carnivore diet, or the so-called “predator diet,” is gaining popularity among those seeking to lose weight quickly. It involves completely abandoning plant-based foods in favor of meat, fish, eggs, and other animal products. Proponents of the carnivore diet claim that this eating system gives a feeling of sustained energy, improves mood, and even reduces inflammation.
However, doctors and nutritionists warn that such a mono-diet has serious health risks. Here are the main problems that experts point out:
Complete lack of fiber
A diet without vegetables, fruits, and grains automatically means a lack of fiber. Namely, it is necessary for normal digestion, healthy intestinal microflora, and prevention of constipation, bloating, and colitis. Long-term adherence to the diet can lead to serious disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
Vitamin and mineral deficiency
Without plant foods, a person does not get enough vitamin C, folic acid, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants. This can lead to anemia, worsening skin condition, weakened immunity, and cardiovascular problems.
Increased strain on the kidneys and liver
The body is forced to process large amounts of protein and fat. The kidneys work at their limit, especially if a person has hidden or existing diseases. The liver may also not be able to withstand such a regime, which causes exacerbation or the appearance of new pathologies.
Risk of cancer
Regular consumption of large amounts of red or processed meat increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer, according to research from the WHO and leading cancer institutes.
The Carnivore diet may provide short-term weight loss results, but its long-term effects on the body are highly controversial. It is worth consulting with a doctor or nutritionist before switching to this type of diet.
