The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine lacks the resources to fully control the border, which is especially important in times of war. According to Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin, the situation with the escape of People's Deputy Artem Dmytruk has highlighted the urgency of this problem. Kostin stressed that the resources provided are not enough to ensure effective control over the country's borders, especially in the most risky regions, such as the Odesa region.
The Prosecutor General noted that a significant part of the border guards are involved in hostilities, which further complicates the situation. "A large number of border guards are constantly fighting in the Defense Forces. They need help with both the technical equipment of the border between checkpoints and the physical protection of the border. This requires money and time," said Kostin.
He emphasized that one of the most important tasks is to allocate additional resources for technical equipment and strengthening physical border protection. This especially applies to the riskiest areas, where control is particularly difficult due to geographical and other factors.
Odesa region stands out as one of the most risky regions in terms of illegal border crossing. In the first half of 2024, six indictments were filed in this region against criminal groups involved in organizing illegal border crossing. This is the highest figure in Ukraine, which emphasizes the need to strengthen control in this region.
Kostin called for urgent resources to strengthen the border service to avoid similar incidents in the future. In his opinion, the government needs to focus efforts on the most risky sections of the border, providing them with sufficient technical and human resources.
