The US Embassy in Kyiv issued an important warning to men with dual citizenship: in Ukraine, they may be mobilized into the Armed Forces, and they may not be allowed abroad.
This message caused a significant resonance and attracted the attention of US citizens who also have Ukrainian citizenship.
"From June 1, Ukraine canceled the exception of "residence abroad", which previously allowed some Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 to leave the country. After this change, American-Ukrainian dual citizens, in particular those who live in the United States, will no longer be able to leave the country," the embassy said in a statement.
"Earlier, dual citizens of the USA and Ukraine from this group could enter Ukraine and then leave it if they deregistered their place of residence in Ukraine and registered their place of residence in the USA. According to our information, this exception was canceled as of June 1," the embassy explains.
It states that it is "limited in its ability to influence Ukrainian legislation, including the application of martial law and the law on mobilization to Ukrainian citizens."
"If you are in Ukraine and cannot leave the country, hide in place and obey all local orders. If you are not currently in Ukraine, we strongly recommend that male US citizens between the ages of 18 and 60 who also hold Ukrainian citizenship refrain from any travel to Ukraine," the statement reads.
