Why the Chinese go to fight for Russia: the stories of contractors who are fighting in eastern Ukraine

According to Russian media, the fact of participation of Chinese citizens in the war on the side of Russia in Ukraine was first confirmed. According to "Important History", 51 citizens of the PRC passed through the Moscow point of recruitment for military service under the contract from June 2023 to May 2024. This is the first fixed figure of foreign citizens from China who became part of the Russian army.

Who are they - Chinese contractors?

According to published data, 31 citizens of China addressed the Russian military center in 2023, and another 20 in 2024. All the Chinese have concluded deals within a few days of arrival. The youngest of them was 20 years old, and the oldest was 51 years old.

The peak of appeals from China came in July 2023, when 8 people signed a contract. Some came to competitions with Russians in pairs, such as 38-year-old Van Minyan and 43-year-old Lee Daochen. These details became known for journalists who explored social networks and contractors' records.

Victims and complaints of Chinese military

Not all contractors from China had a happy fate. In December 2023, 38-year-old Zhui Zhao was killed, who fought in the Zaporozhye region. Other Chinese military, such as laziness Pan and Wei Duan, were wounded and hospitalized, and one of them even received a St. George's Cross for heroism during Bakhmut fighting.

According to the publication, some Chinese who served in the Russian army complained about horrible conditions. One of them, 41-year-old Jianwei, expressed indignation about the weak equipment and lack of medical care. He also said that from the moment of injury to the death of the contractor can take 8 to 10 hours without any assistance.

Another military man, Sun Zhuytsi, was a commander of the platoon of Nepalese mercenaries and recorded a video stating that the Russian command did not provide proper medical care and does not care about the fighters.

Re -return to China

Several Chinese contractors returned home upon completion of service. One of them, a 49-year-old Hunshao, posted a photo from China on social networks, where his child went to a school with a backpack decorated with a Russian tricolor. This fact was another proof that the participation of the Chinese in the war on the side of Russia had different consequences for participants.

Captives and interrogations

Even before returning to China, the SBU interrogated several Chinese soldiers who were captured. One of them confessed that before becoming part of the Russian army, he had no military experience.
