Why the military leaves their positions and how to solve the problem

The problem of voluntary desertions in the Ukrainian army is taking on significant proportions, which indicates deeper problems in the military system. Military observer Denys Popovych told about it.

Popovych noted that the increase in the number of SZH cases is caused not only by individual incidents, but also by systemic difficulties. According to him, among the reasons for the voluntary abandonment of units are the mistakes of the command, inadequate training and allocation of personnel for combat tasks, as well as the lack of proper motivation among many mobilized.

Popovych emphasized that people who were called up without a preliminary health check or level of training often enter the army. Some of them have a reluctance to serve, which can affect their ability to perform tasks. Often, mobilized people feel insufficient support from the command, which increases their demotivation.

"In a broad sense, they don't want to serve. They were simply found on the street and mobilized, regardless of personal circumstances or physical condition. As a result, the lack of motivation leads to the fact that they do not want to be on the front lines and look for ways to avoid service," Popovych emphasized.

The expert noted that systemic problems related to transfers and mobilization processes create additional obstacles for personnel. Popovych believes that without reforms at the highest level, such as simplification of transfer procedures and optimization of mobilization processes, military units are forced to solve these problems on their own.

"The lack of proper control and a comprehensive approach to mobilization leads to the fact that brigades on the ground try to solve these issues on their own," Popovych added.

What is needed to solve the problem?

Solving the problem of SSR in the army requires changes in the military system and command, including:

  1. Increasing the level of training of commanders - to avoid cases of incorrect allocation of personnel to perform combat tasks.
  2. Reforming mobilization procedures – introducing more flexible and customer-oriented mobilization processes to take into account the health and wishes of conscripts.
  3. Providing motivational support for both new and current military personnel.

According to experts, solving these problems should become a priority to ensure the effectiveness of military service and reduce the number of cases of voluntary desertion.
