One of the main rumors actively discussed in the political circles of Ukraine during the last week concerns the possible appointment of the head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak to the post of Prime Minister of the country.
According to this version, Bankova expresses concern about the legitimacy of the president of Ukraine after May 20, 2024 (when his 5-year term of office expires, provided that elections are not held due to martial law). However, there is no doubt about the legitimacy of the government, which is formed by the parliament (the preservation of powers during martial law is provided for by the Constitution).
Thus, according to the content of the rumors, Zelenskyi may intend to appoint a confidant and key member of his team, Yermak, to the position of prime minister, in order to avoid the possible use of the prime minister's position to undermine his power due to the topic of "illegitimacy".
It should be noted that currently there is no confirmation of these rumors. Sources in Yermak's entourage and in "Servant of the People" reject this version, calling it "complete nonsense", as well as speculation about Zelensky's concern about his legitimacy after May 20. It is noted that this topic can be used by supporters of Poroshenko or Russian influential groups.
However, rumors about Yermak's possible appointment are being actively discussed. Three important points should be noted.
First, rumors about Yermak's interest in the post of prime minister have been circulating for quite some time. He is believed to be one of the most influential people in the country in terms of influence, but his current official status does not reflect this reality. The Prime Minister of Ukraine should be given broad powers that make him a potential rival of the President.
Secondly, the current Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal does not express political ambitions and, thus, is not a threat to the president. However, in the event of a change to the post of prime minister, Yermak can become such a threat.
Thirdly, the president's statements about the need to "reset the leadership" of the country, both political and military, are a warning about possible changes in the government and other spheres of power.
