Ukraine's energy facilities, in particular nuclear power plants, are protected at the third level of defense, which provides protection against airborne guided missiles. This was reported by energy expert Gennady Ryabtsev on the air of Novosti.LIVE. He noted that this level of protection was built back in Soviet times, taking into account the risks associated with the possible evolution of the Cold War into a hot phase.
Ryabtsev also noted that not only nuclear power units, but also hydroelectric dams on the Dnieper and Dniester Cascades are protected. However, in addition to technical protections, there are other risks that have already been brought to the attention of the IAEA and other international organizations dealing with energy and radiation safety.
Risks of Russian attacks on energy
At the same time, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga announced Russia's preparations for strikes on critical Ukrainian nuclear energy facilities on the eve of winter. The main targets may be open switchgear and power transmission substations, on which the safe operation of nuclear power plants depends.
On September 23, nuclear security expert Olga Kosharna confirmed these threats. She warned that Russian missile attacks on these facilities could lead to the meltdown of the reactor. However, she emphasized that, even in the event of such an accident, a significant release of radiation would not occur.
