Do police officers without badges have the right to detain citizens

In Ukraine, police officers assisting alert groups of Territorial Recruitment Centers (TCC) have the right to detain wanted persons. This right does not depend on the policeman having a special badge, although its absence is a formal violation on the part of the law enforcement officer.

Lawyer Yuriy Ayvazyan explained on the "Yuristi.UA" portal that, in the performance of official duties, employees of the National Police of Ukraine, who are part of the alert groups of the TCC, have the authority to detain wanted persons, in particular, if they have the status of "Permanent wanted" in the database "Rezerv+".

An important point is the lack of a special badge for a police officer, which may look like a violation. However, according to the lawyer, such a violation does not affect the legality of the law enforcement officer's actions, if he showed his ID and clearly introduced himself.

This means that even without a badge, a police officer has the right to detain wanted persons, if other conditions for detention are met in accordance with the law.
