Why scented candles are dangerous to your health - doctors explain

For many people, candles are an essential element of the festive atmosphere and coziness. At the same time, experts warn that along with a pleasant aroma, they can carry hidden health risks. This is not only a fire hazard, but also a potential negative impact on the respiratory system.

Doctors note that scented candles often contain artificial fragrances, dyes, and other chemical additives. When burned, these substances enter the air in the form of volatile compounds that can irritate mucous membranes and respiratory tracts.

According to doctors, inhaling such substances can cause coughing, sneezing, nasal congestion and throat irritation. People with hypersensitivity or allergies may experience more severe symptoms, including eye discomfort and difficulty breathing. Experts advise such people to avoid scented candles or prefer unscented options.

Scientific studies confirm that burning scented candles can release dangerous gases into the air. The fumes contain carcinogenic compounds, including those formed from the combustion of wax, dyes, and fragrances. These substances can accumulate in the body with prolonged exposure.

Among the common complaints of people who regularly use scented candles, doctors cite dizziness, headache, irritation of the mucous membranes, breathing problems, tearing, sneezing, nasal congestion, and a feeling of tightness in the chest.

Experts draw special attention to the fact that burning candles increases the concentration of formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, and other volatile organic compounds indoors. Dyes used in colored wax are associated with an increased risk of cancer, including bladder cancer, especially if candles are often used in unventilated rooms.

At the same time, pulmonologists emphasize that candles do not pose an immediate threat to health. There are sources of air pollution in everyday life that can be more harmful, such as cooking. However, with regular use, toxic substances can accumulate in the body. Therefore, people with chronic lung diseases or those who have or have had cancer are recommended to completely abandon candles.

To reduce the risks, experts advise following the rules for safe candle use. In particular, choose quality products, use them in well-ventilated areas, and do not leave the flame unattended. It is not recommended to burn candles for more than four hours at a time or leave them lit before going to bed.

It is also advised not to blow out candles, but to extinguish them with a special extinguisher to avoid smoke and splashing of wax. You can rearrange or touch the candle only after it has completely cooled. If possible, doctors recommend giving preference to candles made from natural beeswax and essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances.
