Sitting for long periods of time, especially during office work or school, can gradually worsen the condition of blood vessels and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, scientists from the University of Birmingham (UK) have discovered a natural way to reduce the damage of a sedentary lifestyle - a cup of hot cocoa.
The study, published in the Daily Mail, involved 40 young men with varying levels of physical activity. Scientists looked at how prolonged sitting affects blood vessel function and whether certain foods could reduce this negative effect.
It turned out that a drink made from natural cocoa is rich in flavanols - natural compounds that improve the condition of blood vessels, help dilate arteries, lower blood pressure, and support heart function.
Dr. Catarina Rendeiro, lead author of the study, noted that most people spend more than six hours a day sitting - at a computer, in transport or at home in front of the TV. This causes blood to stagnate, increasing the risk of obesity, depression and heart disease.
"Our challenge is to find simple ways to reduce the harms of a sedentary lifestyle. Flavanol-rich cocoa could be one of those natural solutions," said Rendeiro.
Although scientists emphasize that cocoa is not a substitute for physical activity, one cup of the drink a day can support vascular health and partially neutralize the effects of prolonged sitting.
