Ukraine has decided to cancel the deferral of mobilization for contract graduate students. This was stated by Serhiy Babak, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada's education committee, emphasizing that such an opportunity existed for abuses, not for the development of science.
Key changes
- Waiver of deferment
From 2025, full-time contract training will no longer be a basis for receiving a deferment from mobilization. - Large-scale abuses
According to Babak, under the guise of "desire for science," more than 90,000 people applied for graduate school, which is significantly higher than in previous years, when graduate school graduates numbered only a few thousand. - The focus on the quality of education
“Granit nauki” has become more of a cover for evading mobilization than a real desire for research work. The abolition of this privilege is intended to reduce the number of fictitious applicants and strengthen control in the education sector.
What to expect?
The decision has caused mixed reactions. Supporters of the changes believe that it will stop abuse. Opponents, on the other hand, emphasize that in conditions of war, such steps could negatively affect the development of science and encourage young people to go abroad in search of stability and prospects.
