The former commander of a division of a military unit that carried out combat missions has been caught up in a corruption scandal. According to law enforcement, he organized a scheme in which he sold vacations to his subordinates, hiding their absence from the command.
Servicemen who wanted to take leave paid for it not with money, but with household and computer equipment. The total amount of the illegal benefit received amounted to almost 1 million hryvnias.
This was reported by the Prosecutor General's Office, noting that prosecutors of the Kherson Specialized Prosecutor's Office in the Defense Sector of the Southern Region informed the officer of suspicion of abuse of authority, extortion, and receiving unlawful benefits.
According to the investigation, the suspect, who was the commander of the division, set up a mechanism for receiving bribes: he allowed soldiers to go on vacation on the condition of "buying off", hiding their absence from the higher management. In return for the "service", subordinates bought him household and computer equipment.
During searches of the officer's apartment, illegally obtained property and documents confirming his involvement in the crime were discovered.
Law enforcement officers detained the lieutenant colonel. The issue of choosing a preventive measure in the form of detention is currently being decided. The investigation is ongoing.
