Beer is the most harmful alcoholic drink for health. That's the conclusion American researchers came to after analyzing the diets of more than 1,900 adults. They found that beer drinkers had the worst nutritional and physical activity scores and were at the highest risk of gaining weight.
The study divided participants into four categories: those who drank only beer, only wine, only spirits, or a combination of different types of alcohol. Their diets were then assessed using a healthy eating index.
None of the groups reached the 80-point mark, which indicates a balanced diet. But the beer category showed the worst result, with just 49 points. For comparison, those who prefer wine had an average score of 55, and the combined categories had an average score of about 53.
The situation is particularly worrying for young, low-income men who smoke and drink beer regularly, as they have the highest daily calorie intake, the least physical activity, and are at increased risk of obesity and related diseases.
The researchers also noted that beer is most often accompanied by unhealthy foods — foods rich in carbohydrates, fried foods, high in salt, or processed meats. Wine, on the other hand, is often consumed with a full meal that includes vegetables, protein, and dairy products.
Experts emphasize that our gastronomic preferences affect not only our health, but also our choice of alcohol. And vice versa, the choice of drink itself can shape our eating pattern.
There is one conclusion: the least harm to the body is caused by moderate consumption of wine with a full diet, not beer with chips in front of the TV.
