While the country's attention is drawn to war and economic instability, a quiet but confident threat is growing in the rear - tuberculosis. In March 2025, 1375 cases of this disease were officially recorded in Ukraine. Most of them are new.
This is evidenced by the data of the Center for Public Health at the Ministry of Health. During the month, doctors recorded 1028 cases of primary disease. More than 280 people have already faced the disease - they have a relapse.
The most dangerous category is 289 patients who have found a medical-resistant form of tuberculosis. This means that the usual treatment regimens may not act, and the process of combating the infection becomes long and expensive.
Another 67 patients are those who once threw treatment, passed it or has an unknown history of combating tuberculosis. That is, these cases need additional attention and risk a new source of disease spread.
The numbers beat on the ideas of "missing" tuberculosis.
Of the 1375 patients - 1296 have a pulmonary form, which is contagious. Another 79 patients with extra -lung form, less common, but also dangerous.
The public health center also recorded a clear gender inequality in numbers: tuberculosis is much more commonly affected by men (1050 cases against 325 in women). Almost every fifth patient is HIV-positive (248 people).
Nevertheless, it is possible to cure: in March 1072 patients recovered. But this is only part. Persistent forms, interrupted treatment and poor control by the health care system leave the chance of disease to spread.
Whether Ukraine becomes a new focus of tuberculosis in Europe - depends on the decisions now.
