In Ukraine, garlic prices have reached a record high, exceeding 200 hryvnias per kilogram. And this is not just a temporary price increase - experts predict that this vegetable will no longer be cheap.
The increase in the cost of garlic is explained by several factors. First, due to the deterioration of domestic production in Ukraine and difficulties with imports. The country does not have enough marketable garlic to meet demand, and import supplies are limited due to high prices and transportation problems. European countries, in particular Spain, which is the main supplier of garlic to the EU, are also experiencing a deficit due to worsening weather conditions and increased labor and transportation costs.
In addition, Ukraine is experiencing a decline in garlic acreage, which has affected the harvest. Since 2020, acreage has decreased by 15%, making the country dependent on imported garlic, which costs several times more than local garlic. The situation is further complicated by high prices for Chinese garlic, the import of which through the EU has also become more difficult.
According to analysts, under such conditions, garlic in Ukraine will remain expensive, and its price is unlikely to decrease in the near future. This creates additional difficulties for consumers, who have to pay record prices, while only limited stocks remain on the market.
