In Ukraine, garlic prices reached a record, exceeding the mark of 200 hryvnias per kilogram. And this is not just a temporary price increase - experts predict that this vegetable will no longer be cheap.
The increase in the cost of garlic is explained by several factors. Firstly, due to the deterioration of domestic production in Ukraine and difficulties with imports. There is not enough commercial garlic in the country to meet demand, and import supplies are limited due to high prices and transportation problems. European countries, particularly Spain, which is the EU's main supplier of garlic, are also experiencing shortages due to worsening weather conditions and increased labor and transport costs.
In addition, in Ukraine, there is a reduction in the area under garlic, which affected the harvest. Since 2020, the area has decreased by 15%, which has made the country dependent on imported garlic, which costs several times more than local garlic. The situation is further complicated by high prices for Chinese garlic, whose import through the EU has also become more difficult.
According to analysts, under such conditions, garlic in Ukraine will continue to be expensive, and its price is unlikely to decrease in the near future. This creates additional difficulties for consumers, who have to pay record prices and only limited supplies remain on the market.
