This week, prices for greenhouse tomatoes have risen in Ukraine. The reason for the price increase was a seasonal decrease in the supply of local tomatoes produced at greenhouse plants. Analysts of the EastFruit project report that tomato prices are currently UAH 80-90/kg ($1.92-2.16/kg), which is an average of 13% more expensive compared to the end of the last working week.
Prices for greenhouse tomatoes remain the highest in the domestic market of Ukraine for at least the last 7 years. Producers explain this by the fact that the volume of vegetable collection at local stationary plants remains small, due to which sellers are forced to raise prices for the available volume of products. At the same time, according to analysts, traders have not yet succeeded in compensating for the insufficient supply of local tomatoes at the expense of imported products.
According to analysts, the price of greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine is already 49% higher than at the end of November 2023. This situation is caused not only by the decrease in production in Ukraine, but also by general trends in the market of agricultural products.
In addition, prices of other products are also increasing in Ukraine. For example, onion prices have risen due to increased demand against a limited supply of a quality product. It was also reported about the increase in the price of greenhouse cucumbers, which was the result of a reduction in the supply of imported vegetables.
Experts predict that prices for greenhouse tomatoes may maintain an upward trend in the short term, if the situation with domestic production does not change. However, as supply improves in the coming months, some price stabilization should be expected.
