The first case of botulism this year has been recorded in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. According to the regional center for disease control and prevention, homemade meat preserves turned out to be dangerous, after which a local resident was hospitalized.
After consuming home-cooked meat, the man experienced acute abdominal pain, general weakness, bloating, and headache. On the second day, his condition worsened: typical symptoms of botulism appeared - visual impairment, difficulty swallowing, and dry mouth. The patient was urgently taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with botulism.
Doctors provided the victim with emergency care, including administering anti-botulinum serum. The patient is currently under medical supervision and undergoing treatment.
Botulism is a rare but extremely dangerous disease caused by the ingestion of botulinum toxin, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum in an oxygen-free environment. Infection most often occurs when eating improperly prepared or spoiled home-canned meat, fish, or vegetables.
Experts urge citizens to be extremely careful with homemade preparations. To prevent botulism, you need to carefully sterilize jars, follow cooking technology, do not store canned food at room temperature, and in case of the slightest suspicion, dispose of the product.
