The State Bureau of Investigation exposed a scheme of fictitious military service worth tens of millions of hryvnias

The deputy commander of one of the military units from the Odessa region, whom investigators from the State Bureau of Investigation accuse of organizing a large-scale corruption scheme, will appear before the court.

According to the investigation, the officer set up a system of so-called "remote service" for his subordinates. According to the documents, the servicemen were on duty and received full financial support, but in fact they stayed at home.

Bank cards with accrued salaries were handed over to the organizers, who withdrew the funds and kept them for themselves. More than 20 servicemen participated in the scheme, and the total amount of embezzled funds reached UAH 20 million.

In just four months of the deal, the deputy commander personally received almost UAH 2.5 million for the "service" of other people.

In August 2024, law enforcement officers detained the suspect and four of his subordinates. According to the State Bureau of Investigation, thanks to the principled position of the investigators, the losses caused to the state were fully compensated.

A separate investigation is underway under the article on evasion of military service regarding the servicemen who used the officer's services.

The accused are charged with abuse of office, abuse of authority, and organizing evasion of duty (Part 2 of Article 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, Part 5 of Article 27, Part 4 of Article 409 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The maximum penalty under these articles is up to 12 years of imprisonment.
