Not all products can be consumed without special preparation. Some of them contain substances that, in large quantities, can seriously harm health and sometimes lead to fatal consequences.
Fugu
Fugu is a fish considered a delicacy in Japan. However, its body accumulates a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin, for which there is no antidote. The poison blocks nerve signals between the body and the brain, which can lead to paralysis, respiratory and cardiac arrest. The lethal dose is so small that even a minor mistake in preparing fugu can be fatal.
Cheese casu marzu
Casu marzu is an Italian cheese from Sardinia, made from pecorino cheese with the addition of live cheese fly larvae. The larvae accelerate the decomposition process, making the cheese very soft and even runny inside. Although this product is considered a delicacy, it can pose a health hazard due to the risk of food poisoning.
Rhubarb
Rhubarb is widely used in cooking due to its sour taste, but it is dangerous in large quantities. The main threat lies in the leaves, which contain oxalic acid. This substance can form insoluble calcium salts (oxalates), which are harmful to the kidneys. Excessive consumption of rhubarb leaves can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and damage to internal organs.
Doctors advise using these products with caution and only under proven conditions, following the rules of preparation and dosage.
