A detainee was beaten to death in the Kharkiv pre-trial detention center — seven employees of the institution have been charged with official negligence and abuse of authority, the State Bureau of Investigation reports.
According to the investigation, the incident occurred in April of this year. The suspect, who had just been taken to the pre-trial detention center, was placed in a cell with an already convicted person — which is a direct violation of the law. The convicted person brutally beat the new prisoner until he was semi-conscious. He was never given medical assistance. The man died that same night.
The suspects include the former head of the pre-trial detention center, two operational officers, the assistant chief on duty, a senior corps officer, and two junior inspectors.
They are charged with improper performance of official duties, which led to serious consequences, and abuse of power or official authority. The articles provide for up to 10 years in prison.
