This day, according to the new calendar of the PSCU, the believers celebrate the Day of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian. He was one of the closest disciples of Jesus Christ and left behind the Gospel, three cathedral messages and a book of revelation. In the people this holiday is known as John the Theologian.
John was present at many key events of the earthly life of Christ. It was Jesus that he instructed his mother, the Virgin, after the crucifixion. After the Ascension of the Savior, the Apostle John preached for many years, survived the persecution, remained intact after poisoning and attempts to cook it alive, and, according to legend, lived for more than a hundred years.
At the same time, on May 8, Ukraine is a day of memory of the dead in the Second World War. The temples have prayed for the peace of millions of victims, including military and civilians.
On this day, believers turn to John the Theologian with prayers for healing, resolving family conflicts and assistance in life difficulties. The people were customary to bake vomiting pies and give them to the needy - such a gesture is considered a blessing. At the same time, there are prohibitions: you should not quarrel, evil, refuse help, as well as borrow bread and salt, which was considered a sign for poverty.
The old style of May 8 honors the Apostle and Evangelist Mark.
Birthdays are celebrated today by Ivan and Arsenius, as well as Basil, Mark and Sergei according to the Julian calendar.
Among the folk signs pay attention to the morning sky, precipitation and the appearance of cherry. In particular, the red sky in the morning was considered a harbinger of the rain, and the rain promised a harvest of mushrooms that day. The bright sun in the west heralded clear weather for a few days.
