Spyridon's Day: what can and cannot be done on December 12

On December 12, Ukrainians celebrate a day full of folk traditions and church holidays. This day combines spiritual heritage and belief in omens passed down from generation to generation.

What a holiday on December 12 in Ukraine

According to the new calendar, believers honor Saint Spyridon of Trimifunt and the holy martyr Alexander of Jerusalem , and according to the old style, the martyr Paramon .

Our ancestors believed that on this day it is better to stay at home, avoiding travel due to bad weather. Snow, ice, and thin ice on reservoirs made travel dangerous, and prolonged exposure to the cold could lead to illness.

Traditions and omens

🔹 Housework: December 12 is a favorable day for cleaning, repairing and fixing broken things.
🔹 Cooking: Women baked bread from different types of flour, molded dumplings and fried pancakes. It was believed that such food brings prosperity and well-being to the house. Leftovers of baking were given to chickens for better egg laying.
🔹 Prohibition on purchases: It is not recommended to make expensive purchases or financial deals on this day.

What not to do on December 12

  1. Do not go to wild places: Forests, mountains, reservoirs can be dangerous.
  2. Do not swear: This is especially true for sick people — conflicts can worsen the state of health.
  3. Do not engage in fishing or hunting: The day is considered unlucky for such activities.
  4. Avoid large financial transactions: Investments, the purchase of real estate or equipment can turn into losses.
