Following the inauguration of Donald Trump, his administration appealed to a number of countries to accept third state citizens deported from the US. Among these countries, Ukraine is a state that has been running a full -scale war with Russia for over two years and is critical of Western assistance.
About it reports The Washington Post , referring to the documents that journalists got acquainted with.
In the address, the US side did not indicate a specific number of persons who should be accepted or citizenship deported. However, according to two Ukrainian officials, this initiative has never reached the highest government level, and was actually ignored.
A representative of the Ukrainian diploma conveyed a formal response to the US Embassy: Kyiv will notify the position as soon as it is formulated. But, as the WP notes, no answer has been received. Ukraine has not accepted any deported from third countries, and there was no signs that such a proposal was discussed.
It is interesting that such appeals in the same period were also referred to the governments of Mexico, El Salvador, Panama and Costa Rica. Some of them agreed, others did not. According to journalists, the Trump administration acted either through encouragement (financial assistance, invitation to the White House), or through blackmail: tariff threats, diplomatic pressure and even hints at viewing international agreements.
In the case of Salvador Trupov, the administration paid millions of dollars for keeping deported in well -known prisons. As for the gentlemen, she threatened to view the status of the Panama Canal.
In the statement of the US State Department, these steps were described as part of efforts to combat mass illegal migration and protect American borders. At the same time, the Department of Internal Security, which probably directly initiated requests, did not comment on the situation.
History demonstrates that even US allies may be delicate or inconvenient suggestions when it comes to Washington's domestic political priorities. In the case of Ukraine, a state that protects its independence daily has not yet allowed interference with humanitarian security, despite the dependence on the support of the United States.
