In Transcarpathia, detectives uncovered a large-scale scheme to sell valuable timber, which, according to investigators, involves regional council member Georgy Horvat.
According to the Absolution detective agency, the deputy who heads the regional council's specialized commission on forestry control, instead of performing control functions, has himself become involved in illegal business.
Together with the head of the Beregov Forestry Department, he organized the sale of high-grade oak, which was documented as ordinary firewood. This allowed him to avoid official permits and state control.
For one of the deliveries, about 400 thousand hryvnias were transferred to the account of the deputy's wife. In total, investigators estimated that the illegally sold timber amounted to more than 1 million hryvnias.
Law enforcement officers established that Horvat personally negotiated with the buyer from the Rivne region, acting as a co-organizer of the criminal scheme.
The head of the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor's Office officially informed the deputy about the suspicion under Part 4 of Article 246 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - illegal logging and sale of wood, committed by a group of persons in a prior conspiracy, which caused serious consequences.
If Horvat is proven guilty in court, he could face a significant prison sentence.
