Another corruption scandal broke out in the Lviv Region. Deputy of the Lviv Regional Council Volodymyr Domanskyi and the deputy mayor of one of the territorial communities were detained while accepting a bribe. According to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), the officials demanded 1.2 million hryvnias from the businessman for allegedly helping him win the tender.
The officials were caught red-handed - while receiving 25 thousand US dollars and 190 thousand hryvnias. As it turned out, at first they demanded money from the entrepreneur, promising to ensure his victory in the tender for construction works. However, after the entrepreneur won the victory on his own, the attackers began to claim that it was thanks to their "help" that he won the contract.
Officials insisted they were entitled to a share of the profits, using pressure and threats.
The deputy and his accomplice have been charged with fraud, committed by a group of persons in a prior conspiracy, in particularly large amounts. The sanction of the article provides for a punishment of up to 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Currently, the law enforcement officers are deciding the issue of choosing a preventive measure for the detainees.
This incident became another evidence of the scale of corruption at the local government level. The public hopes for an objective investigation of the case and bringing the culprits to justice.
