The national debt of Ukraine has exceeded the historical mark of 5 trillion hryvnias, said the head of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy, Danylo Hetmantsev. According to him, as of November 30, 2023, the debt amounted to 5,122.5 billion UAH or 140.8 billion dollars in currency equivalent.
Hetmantsev explained that the accelerated growth of the state debt in November is connected with the receipt of a tranche of macro-financial assistance from the EU, loans from the World Bank and placement of domestic state debt bonds.
It is noted that in the period from February 28, 2022, the state debt increased by 87.6%, which is +2,392.4 billion UAH, in currency equivalent - by 50.9%, or +47.5 billion dollars. The external state debt in the debt structure is 68.6%, and the debt in foreign currency (foreign + currency bonds) is 71.4%.
Hetmantsev emphasized that part of Ukraine's external debt was restructured before the G7 and Paris Club official creditors until March 2027, before commercial creditors - until August 2024, which led to significant savings in calculations for servicing and repaying the national debt.
The deputy also noted that the level of debt burden remains high, but controlled. According to the results of 2023, the ratio of public debt to GDP is expected to be around 85%, which, although it is a high indicator, corresponds to previous forecasts and is marked by a decrease in growth rates compared to previous years.
