In the correctional colony in Chernihiv, which became the center of attention due to the disclosure of the "royal" conditions of imprisonment of ex-officials, unusual privileges and luxurious conditions for its "special prisoners" were discovered.
The Office of the Ombudsman of Ukraine has revealed shocking human rights violations in the Menska Correctional Colony No. 91 in Chernihiv Oblast. Amid unsanitary conditions, mold, and cockroaches, three former high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine enjoy privileged conditions of detention.
According to the results of the monitoring visit, the Ombudsman established that the former head of one of the departments for the execution of criminal sentences of the Ministry of Justice and two of his accomplices live in renovated premises, isolated from the rest of the convicts. They have five rooms at their disposal, their own walking yard, and receive food directly in their rooms.
“All the above-mentioned facts indicate injustice and the interest of certain individuals. I have already contacted the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, where they did not see anything strange in this. After that, I once again sent them another letter, and also separately contacted law enforcement officers,” Dmytro Lubinets said in a statement.
The Ombudsman stressed the inadmissibility of such discrimination and called for an immediate response from the responsible authorities. He also noted that such cases undermine citizens' trust in the justice system and the principles of the rule of law.
