According to Radio Liberty, after the war in Ukraine began, 23,500 Ukrainian men entered Moldova illegally. This caused the need for the Moldovan authorities to consider different forms of protection for these persons, in accordance with international and national norms.
The publication writes that the Republic of Moldova provides foreigners with four forms of protection: refugee status, humanitarian protection, temporary protection and political asylum.
In March 2023, the General Inspectorate for Migration introduced a temporary protection mechanism - a status that Ukrainian citizens can use on the territory of Moldova.
Official data reviewed by RFE/RL show that over the past year and two months, 12,764 Ukrainian men aged 18 to 59 – that is, the majority of those who entered illegally – received just such a temporary protection status.
