The prosecutor's office completed the pre-trial investigation and submitted to the court the case regarding the murder of public figure Iryna Farion. The suspect in this high-profile case is an 18-year-old resident of Dnipro, who is charged with intentional homicide due to a language issue.
"Prosecutors of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor's Office completed the pre-trial investigation and submitted to the court an indictment against an 18-year-old resident of the city of Dnipro on charges of murdering public figure, People's Deputy of Ukraine of the 7th convocation Iryna Farion," the message reads.
On the basis of the collected evidence, the actions of the accused were reclassified.
He is charged with the intentional killing of a person related to the fulfillment of a public duty, for reasons of national intolerance, as well as illegal possession of firearms (clauses 8, 14, part 2 of article 115, part 1 of article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) .
The investigation established that on July 19, 2024 in Lviv, the accused shot the victim with a pistol from a distance of about two meters and fled the scene. The woman died the same day from a penetrating gunshot wound to the head in hospital.
"The evidence confirms that the murder was committed due to the victim's fulfillment of a public duty and for reasons of national intolerance. The accused expressed his belief in "national discrimination against citizens of Ukraine who communicate in Russian." Iryna Farion, who was known for her stance on the protection of the Ukrainian language and culture, allegedly split national unity with her actions. On the basis of which the person involved had an intention to kill her," the Prosecutor General's Office reported.
At the request of the prosecutor's office, he was previously remanded in custody without bail, which was extended until January 12, 2025.
