Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women in the world and in Ukraine. At the same time, doctors emphasize: early detection of the disease significantly increases the chances of a full recovery and successful treatment. That is why it is important to know the first signs of breast cancer and seek medical help in a timely manner.
The most common early symptom of breast cancer is a lump or a firm lump in the breast. It is usually a firm, painless lump that does not go away after menstruation, may have irregular edges, and may be immobile. In addition, changes in the shape or size of the breast should be a cause for concern. One breast may suddenly appear larger, change shape, or become asymmetrical for no apparent reason.
Doctors also pay attention to the condition of the skin. Redness, peeling, thickening, indentation, or the characteristic "orange peel" effect can be signals of serious disorders. Another alarming symptom is the sudden retraction of the nipple or the appearance of discharge - clear, yellowish, or with blood, especially if such changes have not been observed before.
Although early breast cancer is often painless, persistent discomfort or pain in the breast or armpit area also warrants medical attention. In some cases, the first signs may be enlarged or tender lymph nodes in the armpit or supraclavicular areas, even without any noticeable changes in the breast itself.
Experts note that the risk group includes women with a hereditary predisposition, hormonal disorders, early onset of menstruation or late menopause, those who have not been pregnant, are overweight, smoke or abuse alcohol. At the same time, breast cancer can develop in the absence of obvious risk factors.
For early detection, doctors advise monthly breast self-examination, regular preventive examinations by a gynecologist or mammologist, and after the age of 40, systematic mammography. Any suspicious changes should not be ignored or postponed.
Doctors emphasize: the first signs of breast cancer may be subtle and not cause pain. It is careful attitude to one's own health and regular preventive examinations that allow to detect the disease at an early stage and save lives.
