Diabetes mellitus is today one of the most common chronic diseases in the world. It is called a “disease of civilization” and even a non-communicable epidemic of the 21st century. In Ukraine, diabetes ranks third in prevalence after cardiovascular diseases and oncology.
Experts say a number of everyday eating habits significantly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. According to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), it is the combination of an unhealthy diet and a sedentary lifestyle that is a key factor in the rapid increase in the number of diabetes cases.
Among the most harmful habits, doctors highlight skipping breakfast, excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates and sweets, frequent consumption of sweet drinks, and late dinners. Doctors explain: in the evening hours, the body absorbs glucose worse, so eating high-calorie food before bedtime increases the risk of metabolic disorders.
Researchers are particularly concerned about the lack of fiber in the diet. Dietary fiber helps stabilize glucose levels by slowing its absorption. The best sources of fiber are vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and fruits.
Doctors also remind us of symptoms that may indicate the development of diabetes: constant thirst, frequent urination, increased appetite, sudden weight loss or gain, and increased fatigue.
Traditionally, there are three main types of diabetes: type 1, which requires lifelong insulin therapy; type 2, which usually does not require insulin; and gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy.
Experts emphasize: timely changes in diet, weight control, and regular physical activity significantly reduce the risk of developing the disease and help maintain healthy blood glucose levels.
