Donald Trump, the newly elected US president, is demonstrating his determination to end the war in Ukraine. His national security adviser, Michael Walz, outlined the new administration's main priorities in this regard in an interview with CBS.
Volz noted three key points that would be decisive in the process of ending the war:
- Formation of negotiation participants. It is important who will be invited to the negotiating table.
- Mechanism for engaging the parties. It is necessary to find a way to force the parties to sit at the negotiating table.
- Framework of the agreement. Defining terms that will be acceptable to all parties to the conflict.
“President Trump has made it clear that this war must end,” Walz emphasized.
Volz also said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is ready to work with the new US administration to achieve peace. However, it remains unclear whether this “peace plan” will include demands for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory.
The adviser's words provoked a mixed reaction. He warned that the war in Ukraine is a "meat grinder" that could lead to a global escalation.
During the election campaign, Donald Trump claimed that he could end the war in a day. However, his words were met with skepticism among experts. Even if negotiations with Russia take place, the resolution of the conflict depends on many factors: Ukraine's positions, international pressure, and the Kremlin's willingness to make concessions.
In his latest speech in Washington, Trump reiterated his desire for peace. He said he would begin reaching out to Russian leader Vladimir Putin immediately after taking office.
Experts believe that Trump will have to balance his desire for a quick peace with protecting Ukraine's interests. In addition, his ideas may provoke resistance among US allies who support Ukraine.
Will Trump succeed in implementing his ambitious plan? There is no answer to this question yet. But one thing is clear: the conflict in Ukraine remains a key challenge for the new US president.
