The United States and the European Commission allocated 106.6 million euros for the restoration of the energy infrastructure of Ukraine, which was significantly damaged by Russian attacks. The main part of this aid was received by the company DTEK, owned by Rinat Akhmetov. These funds should ensure the critical restoration of generating capacities and energy supply systems.
Financing details
- The European Commission:
- Allocates 62.8 million euros.
- The funds are directed to the purchase of equipment and materials for the restoration of power generating capacities.
- US Government:
- $46.1 million was provided.
- The financing is intended for the purchase of control systems and dozens of new transformers, necessary to stabilize the energy supply of millions of Ukrainians.
Additionally, through USAID, the United States has already provided DTEK with repair equipment, including truck towers, pickup trucks, transformers, and cables.
DTEK General Director Maksym Timchenko thanked international partners for their support, stressing that such assistance is a recognition of the importance of DTEK in ensuring stable electricity supply in Ukraine.
Timchenko emphasized that despite Russia's unprecedented attacks on Ukraine's energy system, the company continues to restore destroyed facilities.
Due to Russian shelling:
- 90% of DTEK's generating capacity was destroyed.
- In November 2023, rocket strikes hit three of the company's five thermal power plants, one of which is still not working.
Despite the difficult conditions of the war, DTEK invested more than $1 billion of its own funds in the restoration of the energy infrastructure. These funds are directed to repairs, modernization and provision of electricity to millions of consumers.
US Assistant Secretary of State Jeffrey Payette noted that assistance to Ukraine is of strategic importance for strengthening its energy stability:
"The United States is proud to support Ukraine in the fight against Russia's energy terror. This aid package is another step towards restoring and strengthening its energy system.”
