Even the full return of Ukrainian refugees will not be able to change the demographic trend of Ukraine, as the country is in a state of prolonged depopulation. The only way to increase the population remains the opening of borders for immigrants. This was stated by the director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research by Ella Libanov.
She stressed that the so-called sexual age pyramid of the population in Ukraine has become a rhombus.
“Because very little is born in recent years. The potential of demographic growth is fully exhausted, and if we want to increase the population, there is only one opportunity to attract migrants from other countries, ”Libanova emphasizes.
However, the demography has doubts that Ukrainian society is ready to accept a large number of immigrants with another culture and religion. She stressed that, with the exception of Transcarpathia and some parts of the Odessa region, Ukrainians always lived in a "mono -Slavic" environment.
“We are absolutely not a xenophobic nation. But we are not as tolerant as Europeans. Because this must be taught. I can't say it's bad. When I look at what is happening in Europe, sometimes I think it is better like ours. But there is what is. And I am absolutely convinced that we are not ready to live now with a lot of completely unlike migrants. This is a problem. The problem is, ”Ella Libanova notes.
Demographic situation in Ukraine
As we wrote, according to demographers, in total, about 29 million people live in Ukraine -controlled territories. Plus minus one million, says demographer Alexander Gladun.
According to him, about 2.4 million people live in the occupied Crimea. But on the continental part of the occupied territories, the demographic picture is much less clear. Demographers put a frame of 1.2-2.5 million people. But it is difficult to understand how many Ukrainian population remained, and how many Russia has brought its colonists during the war.
