A unique operation took place in Lviv, which helped save the life of a 6-year-old girl, Polina Bidyuk, who suffered from a rare disease — Wilkie's syndrome. This syndrome, which is diagnosed in only one in a thousand patients, made it difficult for her to eat and caused her to lose 4 kg in a few weeks.
Polina from Khmelnytskyi started vomiting after every meal, and her parents asked for help. At first, doctors suspected appendicitis, but later, after an examination, she was diagnosed with Wilkie's syndrome, a disease that causes intestinal obstruction due to compression of the duodenum by the mesenteric artery.
Given the seriousness of the situation, when medical treatment did not help, Lviv doctors decided to resort to surgical intervention using the Da Vinci Si robotic system. The operation became extremely difficult due to the location of the organs in the critical zone, because the pancreas, liver and bile ducts are located next to the duodenum.
Within two hours, surgeons performed the operation, creating a bypass for food, connecting the free loop of intestine to the top of the duodenum. This allowed food to enter the small intestine unhindered, bypassing the place of compression.
Now Polina is recovering quickly, has started to eat well and is regaining her weight. Thanks to robotic surgery and the high professionalism of doctors, her life was saved.
