People's deputy Serhii Nagornyak called on the Verkhovna Rada to support a key decision for Ukraine's energy security — to start the completion of the third and fourth power units of the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant. According to him, this initiative is strategically important and has broad support among Ukrainians.
On the air of the TV channel "My-Ukraine", Nagornyak emphasized the need to adopt a state-level decision as early as next week, when the parliament will consider the relevant draft law.
"The development of atomic energy is critically important for our country. This is an issue of energy security that cannot be delayed," the deputy noted.
According to Nagornyak, there are already agreements with the American bank regarding financing for the implementation of the project, as well as the resources of "Energoatom" for the start of work.
The deputy emphasized that the completion of the units of the Khmelnytsky NPP will have several advantages:
- Cheap electricity: ensuring a stable supply for the country's needs.
- New jobs: attracting specialists, including from the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP.
- Citizen support: according to sociological surveys, more than 80% of Ukrainians support the development of nuclear energy.
The completion of the third and fourth units of the Khao NPP has been under discussion for more than a year. The Cabinet of Ministers approved this project in April 2024. In the summer, he was supported by the parliamentary energy committee. Today, the third unit is 80% ready, and the fourth unit is 25% ready.
Nagornyak summed up:
"We have to make this decision in order to ensure energy stability and take an important step in the restoration of Ukraine."
Why is this important?
Completion of power units of Khao NPP is not only a question of energy independence, but also an important step for economic recovery of the country. Adoption of the draft law will be a signal to investors and international partners about Ukraine's readiness for large-scale infrastructure projects.
