At the beginning of the winter period of 2024/2025, Ukraine faces serious challenges in the field of energy supply due to the consequences of a full-scale invasion. The loss of generation capacities in a large area of the country seriously complicated the situation, limiting the possibilities of electricity production.
Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, the head of the board of NEC "Ukrenergo", emphasized that the Ukrainian energy system is preparing for the winter period with significant difficulties. Depending on the further development of events, in particular possible shelling of energy infrastructure, the situation may vary from pessimistic to optimistic scenarios. The first involves the continuation of shelling, which will lead to further losses of energy facilities and restrictions in the supply of electricity. The optimistic scenario assumes less shelling and the possibility of restoring more energy facilities.
However, even under an optimistic scenario, Ukraine will face a large shortage of electricity. Returning to the Zaporizhzhya NPP power system would significantly reduce this deficit, but restoration of such facilities may take a long time.
Technical renewal and repair of damaged objects, investments in solar and wind energy, as well as reduction of energy consumption through energy-efficient technologies are key directions for overcoming energy challenges. The import of electricity from Europe is also important, which helps to reduce the load on the domestic energy system.
The shortage of interceptor missiles endangers Ukraine's energy security, making it vulnerable to missile attacks. Attracting international support to strengthen air defense systems is a critical step to protect critical infrastructure.
Preparation for winter includes the active participation of all sectors of society — from government structures to citizens. Ensuring energy security requires an integrated approach and cooperation at the international level to overcome current challenges.
