After more than a century of activity, the Naukova dumka , one of the key scientific publishers of Ukraine, has announced the termination of its work. The decision to liquidate was made by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the last day of operation of the bookstore on Tereshchenkivska Street and the online store will be December 2, 2024 .
Scientific Opinion, which has been in existence for 102 years , was the leading publishing house of academic literature in Ukraine. It specialized in the publication of scientific studies, monographs and reference literature, including fundamental works of Ukrainian scientists.
However, as reported by the head of the distribution department of book publications, Victoria Ageeva, this publishing house will no longer work:
"Nobody will be able to buy the book from us anymore. The publishing house is being liquidated by the decision of the National Academy of Sciences."
The bankruptcy procedure was started on October 5, 2024 , according to data from the OpenDataBot platform.
The employees of the publishing house were warned of layoffs two months before the final closure. This caused sadness among many fans of "Scientific Thought", because the closure will also affect the bookstore on Tereshchenkivska Street, which has long been a center for scientists and lovers of Ukrainian literature.
The publishing house's online store will also stop working on December 2.
The official reasons for the liquidation have not yet been fully disclosed. However, financial instability and limited resources at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine probably became key factors. The lack of government support against the background of general economic difficulties may also have contributed to this decision.
