The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, expressed confidence that he will be able to ensure the continuation of the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine after the end of 2024. This was reported by Reuters , noting that Slovakia is actively preparing for intensive negotiations on gas supply.
Fico emphasized that Slovakia wants to avoid additional costs for alternative routes and preserve transit through Ukraine. The Prime Minister of Slovakia also added that the country has sufficient gas reserves and is planning a joint solution with its EU partners.
According to the Slovak Prime Minister, his country has a long-term contract with the Russian Gazprom and would like to maintain the import of Russian gas through Ukraine. However, transit will end at the end of 2024, as Ukraine does not plan to extend the transit contract.
Fico noted that he is seeking to ensure continued supplies from the east to avoid paying higher transit fees for gas to other destinations.
"We see no reason to pay more for gas than is necessary for geopolitical reasons," he said.
