In Ukraine, periodic fishing bans are in effect throughout the year, aimed at preserving fish resources and maintaining the ecological balance in water bodies. These restrictions apply both to certain periods and to specific locations.
When is the fishing ban in effect in Ukraine?
According to the “Rules of Amateur Fishing” in Ukraine, it is prohibited to fish:
- when spawning occurs - from April 1 to May 30 / June 19 inclusive (on rivers and their tributaries / on reservoirs, lakes, bays, respectively);
- during its wintering period – from November 1 until the beginning of spawning (this time is established annually by the fish protection service).
The exact dates when the fishing ban ends can be adjusted. For example, during the winter, fishing in wintering holes is not allowed. These dates can also depend on when a particular fish species spawns, the region and the water bodies.
In 2023, a new ban appeared - from February 15 to March 31, it is forbidden to catch pike (the fine for illegally catching one pike is UAH 3,468, or criminal liability may occur).
The ban on catching crayfish also remains in effect until June 30 (the fine is 3,332 hryvnias for each crayfish caught or criminal liability may apply). After the ban ends, no more than 30 crayfish per day will be allowed for each person.
Previously, we detailed the fines for those who violate the fishing ban or fish in unauthorized areas.
At the same time, fishing rules allow fishing even during the period of prohibitions, but only in places from a special list within populated areas.
The ban on fishing during wartime primarily concerns the curfew - during this period of time, fishing is prohibited. This is done primarily for the safety and preservation of the lives of fishermen.
What is the fish catch rate in Ukraine?
In Ukraine, there are regulations regarding how much fish can be caught per person per day (calendar). During this time, one fisherman is allowed to catch 3 kg of fish (of one species), as well as one fish of the permitted species and size (also called a “trophy”). For example, it can be a catfish with a minimum length of at least 60-80 cm or a pike perch – 42 cm long.
All these norms are spelled out in Appendix 2 to the “Rules of Amateur Fishing”. At the same time, during spawning, one fisherman can use one fishing rod – float or bottom – but with two hooks, or spinning with one artificial bait. Also, fishing is only allowed from the shore of a lake or river. After spawning (and the ban), one fisherman is allowed to use up to 7 hooks.
What types of fish can be caught without restrictions in Ukraine?
The updated “Rules for Amateur Fishing” have abolished the catch quota for some fish species – these include sunfish, rotan, tulka, bluefish, and bream. The rules also include a “bycatch” quota (a fish smaller than the quota) – it can be no more than 10% of the catch.
